Description
Barred owl, more commonly known as the hoot owl, is a common sound in old forests and swamps. It's distinctive hooting call of 8-9 notes is described as "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?" Now if it's mating season, you're going to hear hoots, caws, cackles and gurgles!
They don't migrate. Most stay within six miles of where they were born but they have slowly been spreading into the Pacific Northwest and southward into California. The barred owl has a wingspan a little over 3 feet and weighs anywhere from 16.6 to 37 oz.
Fossils of Barred Owls, at least 11,000 years old, have been dug up in Florida, Tennessee, and Ontario.
