Description
'Pilgrimage'
Historic Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah Georgia. This child angel stands watch over the graves of a married couple who died almost a century ago. There are other family members surrounding them. It is a very large and beautiful marble statue to behold as the angel girl is as large as an adult and the flecks of the marble glisten when the light hits them.
She is surrounded by a beautiful curved marble wall with a verse from St Mark, chapter 10, verse 15. "Verily I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the Kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter within."
The shell she is holding I believe represents a scallop shell as there are religious meanings tied to a scallop shell. In Christianity, a scallop shell is often seen as a symbol of a pilgrimage, thanks to the use of a scallop shell by the Apostle St. James the Great, who traveled with a shell and would only ask those he met for enough to fill the shell – whether it be a small drink of water or a mouthful of food.
The other religious symbolism of a scallop shell is a reference to Baptism and is often found as decoration on Baptismal fonts. The dish used by priests to pour water over the heads of catechumens in Baptism is often scallop-shaped.
