Description
Built in 1853, this Italian Renaissance Revival style building on the corner of Broad and East Bay streets in Charleston SC, was built for the State Bank of South Carolina...which decided to move farther up the road after the Federal bombardment of the city, 1863-65. Occasionally cannonballs have still been found in the basement!
The property has changed hands several times over the years and is currently for sale (2015). A previous restoration in 1978-80 was extensive inside and out but I don't think anything since then and the unfortunate current neglect is starting to show some wear and tear on the structure, like the broken window pane on the transom. Hopefully new owners will take it over soon and get it back to snuff.
