Description
'Old South Hitching Post' b/w
Eagle's head hitching post, a little bit of patriotic old south charm found in Reidsville North Carolina. Eagle head hitching posts are a rare find but found some popularity after the 100 year celebration of Independence day in 1876.
In the 19th century, hitching posts were created by skilled craftsmen who would carve the figure in wood. This would then make it's way to the foundry to be cast by pouring molten iron into a sand mold. By the 1920's, most hitching posts were relics no longer needed as automobiles made their presence and many posts were sent to be melted down for scrap iron during both World War I and again later for World War II. Because of this, it is a real treat to come across one in an unexpected place.
