Description
Profile portrait of an Eastern Gray Morph Screech Owl with added textures for an artistic effect.
The Eastern Screech Owl is common east of the Rockies, pretty much wherever trees are and they will nest in backyard nest boxes. You may not see them as they camouflage particularly well and they are no bigger than a pint glass, weighing between 4 -8 oz. Their wingspan can be up to two feet.
If you hear a spooky mysterious trill at night...could be the screech owl. They have two basic songs, one is an even pitched trill (vibrating sound) the other is a shrill, descending whinny. Yes, I said whinny and yes, it does sound a bit like a horse neighing or whinnying!
In addition to these sounds, they also have many calls. True to the name, screeches can be heard when they are in defense mode. They will also clap their bills, make loud sharp barking calls if agitated. You might also hear soft low hoots.
Other interesting tidbit is the flight pattern. Most flights are less than 75 feet. When traveling between perches, these owls often drop, fly straight, then rise again, in a characteristic U-shaped pattern.
