Description
This beautiful Depression Era Art Deco style structure was built as a Post Office, Courthouse and Federal Building. After almost two years of construction, the dedication ceremony in 1933 was attended by more than 5,000 people.
It stands on the grounds of the former Sloan House which was the original Guilford County Courthouse. The Sloan House was made of timber and had stood on the site for 100 years. Some historical references say that the armies of General Green and Lord Cornwallis fought around the Sloan House during the Revolutionary War.
The building was renamed in honor of six term US House Representative and District Court judge L. Richardson Preyer in 1988.
Located just inside the Downtown Historic District of Greensboro North Carolina, it is currently being used for the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina after the postal service moved out in the late 1980's.
