Description
A mix of architectural styles clad in terra cotta and granite, the Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company building was built in 1922-23. On completion the $2.5 million dollar structure was paid in full on opening day.
The 17 story U shaped building for a period of time was the tallest and largest office building in the South. People came from miles around to gaze in wonder then and it's still a pretty splendid site today.
The company slogan was, "A Jefferson Standard policy is a Declaration of Independence for the family." This is reflected by the bust of Thomas Jefferson over the main entrance. You can see the year 1922 in the facade for the year construction was started.
In it's early days it was known as a 'city' within a 'city' due to the large variety of businesses residing within including a rooftop restaurant.
Today, most of the building is used for Jefferson-Pilot offices and the restaurant is now a private club.
It's a stunning piece of architecture in my opinion, which for the record was designed by architect Charles C. Hartmann, who was persuaded to move here from New York for the project.
