Description
Spotted Wintergreen, also commonly called "Pipsissewa" (say that fast three times, if you can!) is a woodland wildflower found in forests mostly in states east of the Mississippi and in Eastern Canada. It's also 'wandered' to the mountains of Arizona, Mexico and Central America south to Panama.
At one time the roots were used in root beer recipes. Mostly it is appreciated for it's quiet beauty, it is not a show off flower. In fact, I think it could be easy to miss it altogether with it's subtle pale color and it's quite small. The petals are smaller than a dime. One of those wonders of nature that I'm happy to have spotted.
The densest distribution is in the Carolina Piedmont area of North Carolina and that's me! It's genus, Chimaphila, comes from the Greek words meaning 'winter' and 'loving'.
